Trooper or Fronty - which rules the most?

just about all the MK1's have had serious tin-worm problems and had serious repair jobs don on them ...
The Frontera's chassis (alltho the same as the troopers) are much better built and do not suffer from tin-worm attacks
Glad I picked the Frontera over the trooper now. Preferred the body shape when I first saw it and was seriously considering the trooper as an alternative at the time. No rust or rot anywhere on mine yet. Im touching some serious wood now!
I have a 1995 trooper SWB, a 1996 Fronty SWB and a 1999 fronty LWB(the only one that is roadworthy is the 1996 fronty)
The trooper is great off road but cant be driven on the road as the body to chasis mounts are rotten hence no mot. The 1996 fronty is very similar to the trooper in handling and the basic layout of the dash controlls (not great) Not sure about he later Troopers, but dont go for the 3.0.......

the trooper 3.0 flywheel fits the frontera engine when coupled with the gearbox and spacer bracket. it is the SAME fly as the frontera 2.8
i personally have fitted a isuzu 2.8 fly, ditched the spacer plate and extended the prop by 2 1/4 inches. use the isuzu 2.8 front prop straight swap. Cost me about
i own a 3.1 trooper and a 2.8 frontera and personally the trooper is a far better vehicle inside, spacious and comfy. The frontera is cramped in comparison and doesnt have the luxuries of the isuzu. But the fronteras economy far outweighs the troopers about 33 to 28 in comparison.
im in the process of swapping out the 3.1 to fit a 2.8 just to gain economy as i do a lot of miles. ill have a cracking 3.1 going cheap if anyones interested
back to the trooper or fronty post
i had a 2.8 trooper yrs ago, great engine, gear box etc,but when it come to the m.o.t it cost me nearly a grand to have the underneath welded & under sealed, didnt look like alot of rust when i brought it,i knew there was issuses for the m.o.t but not so costly so i would stay clear & buy the 2.8 fronty.even when it was welded & m.o.t'd i never felt safe when towing (because of so much welding, maybe that was just mentally though).i must admit that before i brought my latest fronty that i looked at a few troopers again chassis were not good,so i went for the fronty even though i got the 2.3td but that does for my needs.give you a good example of troopers for sale, look on e-bay find a couple for sale then message them asking what condition the chassis is in over 80% of the time you get no reply ,why not coz there rotten simple. hope this helps wouldnt want anyone to get caught like i have a few times my frontera 2.3 td is a slug in snails clothing ha
Just another thoughtNot wanting to stir up a hornets nest, but a mate suggested a Toyota HiLux Surf as an alternative.
Autotrader site shows plenty below £2k in the UK mainland but not knowing these cars, can anyone tell me how they stack up against the Fronty / Trooper debate? (ducks for cover) Cheers

From 1992, the UBS Series ("Holden Jackaroo", as it is known in Australia) was available with a pushrod overhead valve (OHV) 3.1 L intercooled turbodiesel (designated 4JG2) producing 84 Kw (113 hp) at 3600 rpm, and 260 Nm (192 ft·lbf) at 2000 rpm
Hope this sorts out some queries about the isuzu 3.1 I couldnt find anything for the 2.8 though.
There are good and bad examples of all all models of vehicles out there. If you are not under pressure take your time and look at plenty of cars to find the one in the right condition for you. I have a 3.2 monty and a 2.0 swb fronty. The fronty is used as a work van and is off road most days in the woods where the swb is a bonus for manouverability. The basic mechanics are a plus but my only regret was not realising that a 2.8 swb was available. The monty gets used for long trips and as a family car. It is so comfy as the seating is more armchair and less car like. The higher roof makes it airey and with the seats down you can cram some stuff in. The obvious solution to any rust issue is not to buy a rusty one. An import bighorn from Japan is less likely to have been exposed to road salt but as said before you can pick up a monty cheaper than a trooper simply because people prefer the Isuzu badge.
