Just a couple of really simple questions ?

Postby Dalov on Tue Jan 08, 2008 11:42 am

While im in stupid Newbie mode, can someone answer a couple of questions for me please.

Actually i have to point out im not quite as thick as i make out, the problem i have is that ive never been in a Frontera before let alone owned one and the one i got recently had no manual etc etc with it, so im not sure whats standard and whats not :)

Anyway >

Mine is a 1995 2.0 swb sport

The alarm is a pain in the backside, from unlocking the door i have about 5 seconds to put the key in the ignition before the alarm and immobiliser kicks in...Is this normal OR should it be remote central locking as all i got given was a key and no fob ?

Now, probably an early contender for dim question of 2008...

Is the steering column height supposed to be adjustable ? I can see on the back of the steering casing a gap where i would normally expect an adjuster lever to be, but there isnt one.

Damn i really must go buy a haynes
:D

Stering column, mine is none adjustable even tho' its a limited edition. They probally just use the same casing for the adjustable and non-adjustable, much the same way as its the same dash, but some have certain switches balnked off for different models.

I even have a glowplug light on mine, but its petrol, its just a case of standard parts

As for the alarm question, sorry mines remote locking

Look to see if your seat is height adjustable, if so, there will be a cranking handle at the front right of the seat base

It must be low for you, I'm 5' 6'' and I have the seat cranked up

Well i spent a few quid on the swb before Christmas getting the brakes done, a new exshaust, Spots that come on when i want them to (not when they decide) and windscreen wipers that dont think the stop point is directly inline with my view or that intermittent is move 4 inches stop wait 10 seconds and move another 4"

If im honest ...after 20 years of company cars it was nice to get my hands dirty again and "give it a go"....I served 2 years of a 3 year mechanical apprenticeship but that was on MUCH older cars like MGB GTs, E type jags, Jensons and Triumphs..So when i open the bonnet of a modern car i step away quite sheepishly but i find the little swb very familiar under the bonnet..It has an engine in the middle where its supposed to be ! :D

Anyway im blowing out some mechanical cobwebs and playing with the SWB but i need a newer one for me not to bugger about with that will be the family car...Even my missus like the swb !

But your right...It is a Bug :!:

I love mine, wouldn't hesitate to get another.

I'm actually trying, unsuccesfully I add, to get our lass to get a SWB

Well im looking at a 1998 2.5tds transglobe tomorrow and already my wife and 18yr son are bickering who is going to have the swb :D

We live quite near the beach in Devon and my son pictures his mates coming down from London during the summer and taking the whole roof off cruising along the sea front...But my money is on the roof staying on and my missus winning this little battle :D

She hated the car at first but now if we go round friends or down the pub she is the first to push a beer in my hand and announce she is driving back ...with no objections from me

Right. On my 95' LWB there is a little black circle of plastic with a red light on it just by the ignition barrel. I have to wave a little black fob over it to disable the immobiliser. if I dont turn the key in the ignition within about 15 secs the alarm goes off. This little black fob thing is a pain in the butt, and had I known more about Fronteras when I got mine I probably would have left it and gotten a later or earlier model. I think they only had this fob idea for a year or so. But if you have no fob then chances are you dont have the immobiliser fitted. However its well worth checking all the door contacts to make sure none of them are corroded. I had that problem on mine and every time I opened the door the alarm went off immediately because the switch on the door was stuck.

Hope all goes well with yours.

After reading a few other posts i thought that might be the case.
Like i say it gives me a few seconds to put the key in the ignition and if i do it intime theres no problem.

My son in law went for a spin the other day and i told him about it...anyway he opened the door, jumped in messed around adjusting the seat and the alarm went off..He was even trying to start it but the immobiliser was working.

I found if the alarm does go off and you are sat in the car..turn the ignition off...Open the door..turn the ignition on again and then close the door and all is fine.

Many thanks for your help

Same in mine if the alarm goes off. I am surprised that yours starts without the fob thing. Unless you dont have an immobiliser. if i dont flash the fob unit across the receiver the car just doesnt start.

There are two types of alarm, the key disables the immobiliser on the fobless ones.
And gives you a few seconds to get the key in the ignition.
