Help with buying a new Frontty ???

Postby Dalov on Mon Jan 07, 2008 7:35 pm

Hi All

After many weeks of standing outside in the pouring rain and freezing cold trying to get my recently purchased M reg swb 2.0i to be a least a bit reliable, i have now decided to look at getting myself a newer model and get the old up and running for the summer.

What im after is a little advice from you gent that are "in the know"..i.e is there a change of engine that i should for ( were the engines changed for better or worse ones at any time ??

I will have around 2500 - £3000 to spend

Im looking for a 2.8tdi LWB.

When did AC come as an option or standard ?

Leather interiors ?

What would your reccomendations be ?

Many thanks

The 2.8tdi LWB's are begining to get harder to find ...as they were only made for about 18 months...

Personally if you have that kind of budget ..i'd go for a 2.2DTI (B series)

Is there much difference in the performance between the 2 ?

I changed from a Rover sterling with the Honda 2.5 V6 to get my current frontty and find it MASSIVELY under powered...I am a realist and am quite aware that the car is not built for speed...But please, No more of those little blue disability carriages giving me the bird as they blow me away at the lights :-)

What year was the B series started ?

To be honest ...i'm not overly sure ...

i do know that the B's are very comfortable to drive and started around late 98 early 99 .

mpg on the 2.2DTI is similar to the 2.8tdi

the members with the B series 2.2dti will be glad to inform you

Back to the OP's questions....

Not sure if it ever became "standard", but rev B "Limited" Fronties had it fitted.

Sorry if I am incorrect but this is what I think.......

2.0 petrol A model
2.5 Diesel A model
2.8 Diesel A model
I don't really know much about these....Sorry.

98 - 99 VX introduced B model
2.0 litre petrol (Sport & LWB)
2.2 Diesel (Sport & LWB)
3.2 Petrol (This one I am not sure of, possibly LWB only)

I may be wrong but I think AC mainly (Possibly, only!!) was in the 2.2 Olympus, 2.0 RS Sport and maybe 2.2 Diesel RS Sport. I think that the Olympus was the only one with leather interior.

As for your purchase, my own opinion is that you are better off going for a B series

Sorry if I am mistaken with any of the above.
Thanks,
Huw.

Main mistake is your better off with a B

The Glacier had air con to

Plus you could pay extra to have it on most other models except I think the 20L :?

Air con was a extra on the B series other than for the special editions (Limited, Sports RS etc).

If you are wanting power but not fuel economy then go for the 3.2V6 b, has a lot of poke (same 0-60 as the 2.2 SRI Vectra).

The 2.2DTI on the B series is a little slower than the 2.8TD but it seems to cope reasonably well, just you won't be racing sports cars from the lights. If you want the specs for power and 0-60 then try http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Sum ... ?model=973 The more info links next to them will give you the manufacture dates for each model.
'99 3.2V6 Auto Limited.
Some day it will be how I want it to be...

Sorry Ste,

What I should have added was, unless you are technically minded with regards to Fronty's, B is your best option.

Just me being a simpleton
