frontera lwb roof bars

Postby markta on Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:25 pm

today,i went to buy a roof rack for my lwb fronty, halfords were around 100 pounds with a fitting kit (god knows why they dont sell them together),thought it was expensive roof rack to carry a few ladders.so i went & brought two 4ft lengths of 1inch box steel, painted it & sercured it using 8 (in all) U clamps (two each corner) onto the lwb roof bars.does the trick perfect infact will probably carry more weight (as most carry 50 kilos),just thought it might be of interest to someone,as if you dont use one that often you can always take it off until the next time 10 min job to fix back on....
8 feet of box steel 10 pounds
8 u clamps 4 pounds

14 pound in total, bargain me thinks (god im sooo tight hehe)

I did exactly the same thing myself except that I used thick walled aluminium box section that I "borrowed" from work. (They can have it back if they ask!!)

Its got nothing to do with being mean, I just get a kick out of making things I want rather than just buying them ( where's the job satisfaction there). After all, if we all did 'credit card engineering', there wouldn't be any need for our forum community would there! :D

Sounds good to me. Need one of those roof rack things for the spare wheel. I also baulked at paying a 100 quid to Halfords.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!

well if anyone can tell me how to upload a picture on fog, then i will put one on tomorrow.if not & someone needs to see my roof rack then i can send them a pic from me phone (not to many though). if you shop about for steel most lengths of around 8 ft would only cost about a fiver,i never had time to shop about,so a roof rack could be yours for under a tenner, wat wat wat a bargain, something you dont find on ebay these days ha

Looks good, I would stick a bit of bicycle inner tube or summat around the frontera bars tho. just an extra little bit of scratch protection.
I also drink Port and I'm not ashamed to say it!
