I use Norton on all my machines and although it does slow the machines slightly, its a small price to pay for a protected PC!!!
I use F-secure anti virus, and Adaware programs. Adaware is very good, and personal version is free.
Personally I use McAfee's - though it's not free, it's very good and doesn't eat resources like Nortons, and has some enhanced features like port blocking applications to stop many dangerous actions, so even if it misses a virus, it is likely to stop it doing any real damage.
AVG is ok, apart from the locking of older PC's as it does it's updates. Jay

i use windows defender plus adaware & avg
plus i have spy-bot s&d i use once a month this is a good site for free downloads http://www.docsdownloads.com/
We have done some testing of antivirus products int he past for customers to try and find the best set up for them. As it turned out the better set up on XP was AVG anti-virus with the AVG anti-spyware then the paid root-kit protection and windows defender enabled in the background. Caught as many, if nto more, of the threats out there when compared to a paid solution, even those products that cost thousands a year for the licence.
For home use it is possible to get almost the same set-up for free from AVG, though the root kit protection only comes in the form of a scan which you can set up to run every so often rather than active protection. Oh, and the reason why they bundle Norton with so many machines and give you the first year free is that no-one with any brains would touch it, is one of the more expensive home products and is without a doubt the worst in terms of protection and resources. Is about the only way they can sell it to the home market by forcing it onto machines before you buy them..... '99 3.2V6 Auto Limited.
Some day it will be how I want it to be...
Thats me happy then lol cheers guys

Just my 10p worth, whatever you use for AV make sure it checks daily for sig updates, don't matter which one is best, if its sig is out of date it is no use at all
Surprised no one mentioned Kaspersky, first class product, personally would not use Norton, ever Soon to be without a Frontera after 10 years of owning one
