have i made a oops with oil change ?

Postby Rich2.4i on Tue Dec 18, 2007 1:09 am

While i was at work i had to change the engine oil in 2 of the tractors,
so i thought i would do my truck at the same time
BUT with out thinking i refiled my trucks engine oil with 15w/30 universal tractor oil
Will this be OK until next change or should i change again as soon as i can  :?:
I Like this Truck of mine, just like me it's well run in it's not old just older.

Ummm, is that diesel oil?

If so possibly best to change it back out.. Petrols run at different temps to diesels etc.

I'm sure someone else will be able to offer more advice though.

Now that kind of question can lead to a very long debate on oil, type, grades and suitability.
What ACEA classification code is it blended to ?

Some modern oils are universal and meet both petrol and diesel specifications as well as turbo and normally aspirated engines all in one product.

Oh well.. fair enough.

At my work if we put the wrong oil (IE@ put the oil for the Ford Transits) in the wrong car (IE@ the BMW 330) we have been told it will void the guarantee from BMW... and likewise from Ford etc, or Volvo etc, depending on which car you do it to.. Oh yeah, we got a few Sprinters as well ;)
So unfortunately it means we have loads of different oils.

Mind you though as the Fronty is well and truly out of guarantee it's all ok I guess.

As for me, I wouldn't be putting diesel specific oil (like for tractors) in a petrol engine, or petrol oil in a diesel engine (probably worse with petrol oil in a diesel to be honest)..

I would go safe and drain and get your usual oil.

Just not worth the worry that the tractor oil is to heavy, especaly in the cold.

Is it from the back end of the tractor or was it from the engine?
If it's from the back end then a definite no-no...

hope that helps! :? (Agri Design Engineer)

It was engine oil,

Think i will drain it out tomorrow and put in usual oil (15w / 50) just to be on the safe side, also not got much else to do at work so can do it and get paid for doing it

Err....15/50may be too heavy.....its thicker than what you've just put in...

BMW engines need fully synthetic oil (5/40), Ford engines need semi-synthetic (5/30) and VW diesels need some off the scale super dooper extra fully synthetic (0/30) oil@ around £50 for 5 liters

I think 5/30 or 15/40 is correct grade for the 2.4 petrol engine
What have I told you about Thinking Erroll??
