bristol/somerset meet

Postby Fronty_TPJ on Wed Oct 17, 2012 4:21 pm

Hello everyone, just noticed there are a few more people than I thought live in bristol and the surrounding area with frontys on the forum, was thinking of meeting at a pub somewhere for a chat and then arrange a day where we can all go laning or to dundry or salisbury off roading. Be great to see this happen as not much to do with the forum happens round these parts. Me and my mate (taylor6632) both own frontys and have had a laugh going out getting stuck on the moors so be good to see a few moor of you come along haha hope you got the pun lol

Anyways lets see if we can sort something out cheers all :)

Yep, good idea. I would be interested.
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

I've been on Salisbury plain a couple of times with Rich, from Bourne Valley 4x4 he's got a few trips lined up from now to April next year.

If anyone is intrested I will try and find the itinerary, he normally charges around £30 per vehicle but if we have 5 trucks or ten he may do us a special deal as he can arrange two groups to do different routes and meet up half way round.
I would prefer a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why would you pay someone £30 to drive byways that you can drive anyway/anytime?

Salisbury Plains if I remember right belong to M.O.D. and some areas are only available to the Army etc.. And would need special premission to enter the land.. Put me right if I am wrong. But I know its great FUN on the Plains I did 3 years Driving Tanks etc around Bulford and Netheravon to Tidworth back in the 70s. I dont Think my Fronty would handle some of the tracks and If It did I still have the Drive home. Good Luck to all that go thou.. regards.. Fred. :D
I drive this looking like a CHESHIRE CAT on LPG.. Thinking of the Savings to Petrol Prices..

As Woodwizard says why pay to drive on what is free to those that can be bothered to read a map (I'm nearly lazy as I use Memory Map (MM)).

Total Off Road put together 2 very good road books for the plain, order a copy on line for a lot less than £30.

Have a look on Youtube for laning on the plain, this will give you the lane names then look them up on the wiltshire council site in the rights of way section.

Have a look on the OS maps (pink ones) and look for the red crosses and dots (byways and uc's), link up a route then consult the council TRO file on their site to check your route is legal.

2 long lanes south of the plain are Oxdrove and Compton Down, both run East/West to the West of Salisbury. Oxdrove is south of Compton Down.

I've driven West on Oxdrove, then travel up the A30 a mile, picked up the Western end of Compton Down and followed it East back to Salisbury, About 17 miles each way, then to fininsh off and heading for home we came up across the Plain from Tidworth to Marlborough. Then did some more lanes North of Marlborough to Lamborne, finishing up in Wantage, then by road to home. Made for a long day of some 14 hours behind the wheel and did circa 200 miles door to door.

A useful on-line site is "wheres the path", gives you full screen O/S maps as it does on MM, so makes route planning easier if you haven't got MM.

Regards

Stuart

I do agree that free off roading is better, but there is nowhere around bristol area that is really obvious on a map. Found a few lanes that have been too narrow/overgrown or have been blocked off to stop the travellers getting in but nothing fun.

By the time i've driven to the plains in both time and fuel money, its easier to use the pay and plays around bristol for now. Plus if i break the truck, less distance to get it home again.... :(
