Air Intake Mod

MODIFYING YOUR AIR INTAKE - FRONTERA ‘B’ LWB         submitted by Carl

This is really simple to achieve and will at the very least give you a noticeable improvement in performance. It’s also quite easy to revert back to the ‘Genuine Part’ way if you decide to go off-roading. You’ll need a flat head screwdriver, a cross-point screwdriver, a sharp kitchen knife, and some duct tape or similar.
This is what you do:

You first need to purchase a length of Flexi-Alloy Tubing with 70mm bore (diameter). I got mine from www.carnoisseur.com Going to their online store, I clicked through the ‘Induction’ Link and then ‘Green’ Link to find it. It comes in 1metre lengths and you have a choice of silver or black as the two colour options. I chose black as the dirt won’t show as much. It set me back a massive £10.34 (inc vat and delivery). Also a 60-80mm hose clip will be handy if you have one or use the clip off the part you will remove.

Once you have the tube follow these instructions:

1. Remove the intake to your Air Box by loosening the hose clip and removing the screw (arrowed with my finger). This also removes the first resonator as well. The assembly should come away quite easily.  Detach the hose clip and re-use it if you wish.

2. Cut your 1 metre length of Flexi-Alloy Tubing in half, a sharp kitchen knife will do. This way if you make a mistake or damage it, you still have the other half to try again.

3. Attach one end to your air box and pass the other end between the radiator and the chassis. You will have to squeeze it slightly so it may look egg-shaped, make sure it is pointing to your grill where it will eventually receive lots of air.

4. As you no longer need the resonators (they act as an air reserve as your 4x4’s air system was designed for off-roading, which means the air flow is not very good) Remove the biggest one from your air system by removing the hose as demonstrated by my wife. Incidentally, the silver tape on the top right is covering where I fitted my Hi-Clone. The tape is also a good at reflecting heat.

5. Finally, seal the two holes where the hose was removed. I used a round plastic connector from work and covered silver tape round it.

And that’s it!! It should take no more than 30 minutes to do this, and you should notice a difference especially in 2nd and 3rd gears. My wife agrees that our Frontera feels a lot nippier and pulls away a lot sharper.
At the time of writing this I did not have enough time to monitor the fuel consumption but watch this space and I’ll update when I have some results.
Good luck !
